International Studies Blog

Welcome to Global Humboldt - the International Studies blog! The International Studies major continues to change and respond, not only to the evolving needs and interests of our students, but to the world beyond our unique place on the ‘lost coast’. In an effort to open channels for student expression, we created The Ambassador, the International Studies Journal. Entirely student run, the team deemed this a little too formal and it has gradually shifted towards a webzine format. However, the feeling lingered that there should be even more open space for INTL voices – both while students are on campus and from abroad. The creation of a blog seemed the logical next step. As we become more aware of the interconnections of our world and the need for global leadership on issues of sustainability and social responsibility, we must also deepen our understanding that there is no way to isolate ourselves in our little paradise and claim victory on these issues. Global Humboldt is a place to reflect on, recognize and mark, the enmeshed and truly global nature of our shared village as well as the INTL belief in education as a transformative process that is rooted in the community around us, but always reaching out to touch, and change, the world. In the form of ‘Humboldt Moments’ or, for seniors, the ‘Capstone Minute’ we are looking for brief, positive observations in words, images or video that reveal what you are learning here at home and while you are far away. If you are an International Studies major - any year, any concentration – or an INTL alum! - this is a platform for you to share the milestones of your own journey.

Welcome to a new academic year!

Hello Humboldt -

It's gorgeous here on the lost coast and Academic Year 2016-2017 is very nearly underway. I hope you will enjoy the new INTL blog - especially if you are currently studying abroad! We want pictures and your reflections on all that you are learning somewhere else. Alums - we also want to hear from you and what you are up to - but everyone is welcome to the space. After all, we are all connected.

Have a great year - wherever you are!

Dr Holmes

Congratulations, to the recipients of the Global Ambassador Scholarship!

Congratulations to two International Studies students, Andrea Sarber and Caitlin McCollum-Martinez, who have been selected to receive the first-ever Global Ambassadors Fund scholarship at Humboldt State! The purpose of this award, established by Dr. Alison Holmes, Leader of the International Studies Program, is to support full-time HSU students seeking to study abroad anywhere in the world for at least one semester. The recipients of this scholarship receive a grant up to $500.00 to cover costs not readily paid from other sources, such as travel expenses and insurance.

HSU Moments

We are looking for your 'HSU moments' - those times you realized what you wanted to do - what you were about - how a person, a class, an experience here or abroad - changed the way you think. Here's one to get you started:

Commencement 2016

What better way to start a new blog than a celebration of success?! The International Studies Capstone class has been thinking about what they might do when they leave HSU and about what kind of leaders they want to be 'out there'. You have probably seen the HSU graduation pledge: "I pledge to exlore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work". Now enjoy the leadership pledges of our very own seniors.
