Get Involved

International Studies students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and creative problem solving to a wide variety of real world issues through events, collaborations, internships, and partnerships.

Reflecting the goals of the major, International Studies students are involved in activities across campus, the local community and the world around us. One popular group for International Studies majors is the Global Connections Club, a group that helps host and connect international students to our campus as well as creating and supporting events on campus that connect the local to the global. In the past, these have included a cultural fair in the Fall and International Education Week in the Spring.

Majors are also often engaged with our local community through Y.E.S. House, one of the oldest student-led volunteering groups in the country and where students are able to use their language skills tutoring local children, supporting older people, and working on environmental issues in our area.

Other popular groups include:

  • Ballet Folklorico de Humboldt State University
  • Danza Azteca
  • El Centro Academico
  • Humboldt International Film Festival
  • Scholars without Borders
  • Social Inclusion, Equity and Inclusion Center
  • Umoja Center for Pan African Student Excellence
  • Spanish Translation and Interpretation Center

The Ambassador - Student Journal

A special feature of the International Studies major is our capstone class where students create a significant project of their own design based either on their work throughout their academic careers or something they would like to build towards their future careers. As part of that class students created an online ‘zine/journal. Not every class takes up this challenge but we encourage and support student efforts to publish their work not only in our own small way, but on the multiple platforms that exist here at Humboldt such as ideaFest, Toyon, El Leñador, and The Lumberjack.

International Education Week

International Education Week is a 1-unit colloquium class that is required for International Studies students and provides over 40 hours of programming over the course of a week. This signature campus event is designed to showcase the international work of faculty students and staff as well as offer practical advice on studying and working abroad. Students take the lead in both the planning and the execution of this long-standing event by working with faculty and other students to produce a week of programming that is open to the campus and the entire community.
